Arcadia, CA, March 16 -- HRTV (R), The Network for Horse Sports, will continue to add compelling programming to its schedule when it presents
"Unsung Hero: The Horse in the Civil War," premiering on Monday, March 19 at 10:30 p.m. ET.

The one-hour show will present the story of the millions of horses (and mules) that were utilized in all branches of the armies during the Civil War.
"Unsung Hero: The Horse in the Civil War," will discuss how the horses were procured and trained for field use, fed and maintained, and recount the
toll taken on them from service in the field.

The show is narrated by Kent Masterson Brown.  Mr. Brown is a 1971 graduate of Centre College of Kentucky; he received his juris doctor degree from Washington & Lee University School of Law in Lexington, Virginia in 1974.  He has practiced law for 37 years from offices in Lexington, Kentucky and as counsel to Webster, Chamberlain & Bean in Washington, D.C.  Additionally, Mr. Brown is the author of Cushing of Gettysburg: The Story of a Union Artillery Commander, Lexington:  University Press of Kentucky, 1993 (a History Book Club selection and a recipient of the Award of Merit from the Wisconsin Historical Society) and The Civil War in Kentucky:  Battle for the Bluegrass State, Mason City: Savas, 2000.

In the large armies, anywhere from 40,000 to 60,000 horses, and mules, were used in the infantry, cavalry, artillery and quartermaster services.
Daily care, including regularly feeding, shoeing and maintaining the horses and mules was a daunting task, and nearly impossible. In memoirs by soldiers, they recalled incredible sacrifices by the horses.

The show offers hundreds of magnificent period photographs, drawings, illustrations, along with the selected re-enactment scenes, which are employed to
graphically illustrate the vital role of the horse.

Filming of action scenes took place at the re-enactments of the battles of Richmond and Perryville in Kentucky, as well as Shaker Village at South Union, Kentucky and Gettysburg, PA. Filming also took place at the monument to the Horse in the Civil War that stands in front of the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, VA, and at Washington & Lee University and Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA.
