Christmas Gifts for 2010

1. Zenyatta Commemorative Collector’s Issue – $9.95 at www.bloodhorse.com.
This issue highlights the career of the great mare and a look inside the lives of her connections. It also includes an 8X10 photo of Zenyatta.

2. Zenyatta Tapestry Afghan — $54.95 through Exclusively Equine at www.exclusivelyequine.com.
Check out this great gift for the home featuring Zenyatta’s 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic Victory.

3. ‘Reflections on a Golden Age’ by Fred Stone, along with a Zenyatta print or canvas — $159 with print or $425 with canvas at www.fredstone.com or at Santa Anita’s Champions Gift shop (http://champions.stores.yahoo.net).
This is a book for the ages in which Stone takes you through the emotions behind the paintings.  The Zenyatta print or canvas is another beautiful work of art for your home collection.

4. Secretariat Serving Platter and Mugs — $169 at www.fredstone.com.
I love to cook, so I would be thrilled to add this to my collection of serving pieces. The platter is limited to 500, which are signed and numbered by Fred himself.

5. Secretariat Blu-ray/DVD Combo – releases January 25th, 2011.
Well, not in time for Christmas, but if you want to give this to someone, it will have to be in an IOU.  For more information go to http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=5615.

6. Lord of Misrule by Jaimy Gordon — $15.00 at www.amazon.com or your local book store.
Gordon’s Lord of Misrule received the 2010 National Book Award for fiction in the same week it was published.  This book is a must-read and I plan on doing that myself on my Christmas holiday.

7. How Kentucky Became Southern by Maryjean Wall — $23.96 at www.amazon.com.
Three-Time Eclipse Award winner Maryjean Wall takes the reader through the time period which made Kentucky the “Bluegrass State.”  Catch Maryjean Wall on Race Day America tomorrow, December 16th, for the inside scoop.

8. John Henry Bronze Statuette — $1800 at Santa Anita’s Champions Gift shop (http://champions.stores.yahoo.net).
If you have a lot of extra money to spend, why not?  This is an exact replica of the John Henry statue near the Santa Anita paddock.  This edition is limited to 100 statues and signed by the sculptress, Nina Kaiser.

9. “On The Muscle” DVD – $30 at www.ponyhighway.com.
I am slightly partial on this one, as I am in it.  At the time I was Richard Mandella’s assistant and this DVD provides great memories for me.  It takes the viewer through what it was like in the barn of Richard Mandella in 2002.  Stars of the barn at the time were Pleasantly Perfect, The Tin Man and Johar.

The Day After

Yesterday a bubble burst and many tears flowed. It was a disappointment that we hoped against all hope would never become a reality. Yet, it was always in the back of our minds that she could lose one day. It happened in what could have been the biggest moment in horse racing history.

My feeling is Zenyatta’s loss does not take anything away from her legacy. The unfortunate part is she likely will not receive Horse of the Year for her second career campaign that can only be described as more than worthy.

No person was more upset yesterday than her regular rider Mike Smith. In my mind, Mike was awful hard on himself for her first loss. I can’t imagine how he must feel but I wonder if he has asked himself this, would she have been 19 for 19 going into the race if it wasn’t for all the well-timed rides he had given her?
